After 30 hours in airports and airplanes, the Garber team
of 7 arrived in Brisbane 7 a.m. Sunday, (5:00 PM Saturday EST). Travel went very well with good connections,
great flights, and no issues in Customs.
In Brisbane after we cleared customs, we exchanged some
money, and hired a "Maxi Taxi" to take us and our small mountain of
luggage to our hotel. Since check in is
after 2:00 p.m. the hotel allowed us to stow our luggage until later in the
day. Then we set off to explore the area
and find something to eat.

Under an expansive, sunny Australian sky we stretched out
into a brisk 15 minute walk to the Brisbane River where we boarded a "City
Cat" (catamaran river taxi) and rode down to South Bank Park. The Brisbane riverfront that once boasted the
manufacturing lifeblood of this region of Australia dates back to the mid
1700’s. It’s a blend of the old original
brick factory buildings, now revitalized into trendy urban housing, shops, and
galleries and new modern high rises. Framing
the riverfront are beautiful public parks and walk/bike ways, giving a clear
impression that the Australians care deeply for their land and people. Close to the Equator, the sun is hot and
penetrating. So on our walk back to the
hotel we stopped at a local market where Tom bought a half gallon of (can you
guess?) Cadbury’s Chocolate/Caramel ice cream which the 7 of us quickly
dispatched at a nearby park. Long days
of travel, and our adventure under the hot Australian sun found us completely
exhausted when we returned to the hotel.
WHAT!!!! Only a half-gallon of ice cream?? With Tom along, what did the rest of you all get?
